Superman Returns... Again!

As many of you should know by now, Superman has another movie set to release sometime next year, don’t worry though, it is going to have no affiliation with Superman Returns from 2006. So I ask you, is it a good thing to take another crack at a Man Of Steel movie after the worldwide disappointment the last one received? I say, it will be fantastic if done correctly. But there is quite a long list of do’s and don’ts that the creators of the “Man Of Steel” must consider, and even one slip up could give a bad impression on the entire film.

Superman is arguably the most powerful character in all of comics and I don’t need to tell you why. The creators need to realize this, they are not just dealing with a “pretty strong” guy, they are dealing with the strongest person in the entire DC Universe (Boom!). By that logic, he should be given an incredibly challenging task to overcome. I’m not talking about reversing the rotation of the Earth in order to save two missiles; I’m not talking about lifting a krypto-island into outer space. A 21st century Superman needs a physical opponent, powerful enough to pose a deadly threat to him and the entire universe. This could mean Darkseid, General Zod, Doomsday; hell even Brainiac could make a great villain. But the creators gotta realize that Lex Luthor just wont cut it with today’s Superman and I must admit, I’m getting a little tired of kryptonite, at least green anyway.

I can guess what you’re thinking though, “Lex Luthor was the villain in the 1978 Superman movie and that was a huge success.” While I do agree with that, I will say that no matter who the villain was in that movie, it would have turned out great. The film was made at a time when fans has never seen their hero on the big screen or in a two and a half hour feature film. So the idea was new and original, but after over thirty years we need something better. I’m almost 100% sure that the new film will be using Zod as its main antagonist, which is fine. Zod is a character that can match Superman physically and mentally and they could also include some of Zod’s soldiers from Krypton to pose an even bigger challenge to Superman, but my first choice would have been the leader of Apokolips himself, Darkseid. Not only can he match the Man Of Steel, but also he seems to be the embodiment of evil in the DC Universe. With his powers and all of the aliens and creatures on Apokolips, how epic would it be if they invaded Earth in a blockbuster film. Well, maybe in the sequel, besides its not like they wouldn’t be able to do it.  The one thing that Superman Returns got right was the special effects. What he does is completely impossible by our standards so the special effects in the upcoming film need to be beyond normal, they need to be… super!

With spectacular effects, an interesting and original plot and most importantly, the proper choice of cast and characters, this new Superman film may be able to redeem the legendary name and claim the good reviews and positive feedback from fans that a Superman film deserves.
